Naples Dog Magazine Writers’ Guidelines

Naples Dog Magazine delivers informative and feel-good articles about dogs; shopping sources for great dog products; and cutting-edge design and photography to an affluent base of readers. A quarterly magazine, Naples Dog leads the way in all things canine in tropical southwest Florida, capturing the essence of living the good life with dogs.

The voice of the magazine is playful, sometimes quirky (but never sarcastic), vibrant, curious, and friendly. Our readers—southwest Florida residents and vacationers—are enjoying their life “in paradise,” and they want to read lighthearted, compassionate, and compelling articles and essays about dogs in paradise, too. That includes articles on the local upsurge in the organic dog biscuit business, tips on home pool safety, profiles of local veterinarians, thought-provoking and humorous personal essays, details about “haute” new golfing outfits for pups, and much more.

We welcome experienced writers and talented new voices. We’d love to hear from writers familiar with the region, but we’re also open to writers anywhere in the nation who have a grasp of the luxury dog niche. (In the world of Naples Dog, there’s no such things as loving—or pampering—your dog too much.) That said, the magazine is also strongly grounded in the generous philanthropic community of southwest Florida. Each issue will feature several articles about shelters and rescue groups in the area, as well as ongoing coverage of the local humane society. As the magazine expands, we anticipate a growing need for deadline-oriented writers interested in ongoing assignments.

We’re always looking for interesting personal essays, well-researched nonfiction articles, occasional craft or how-to features, book reviews, personality profiles, and other stories relevant to our dog-adoring, southwest Floridian readers.

Submission Instructions
Send your queries or finished manuscripts by e-mail only to editor@naplesdog.com.
For consideration, please send us a great letter that exemplifies your style of writing. Queries should be very specific about the article you’d like to write (i.e., the subject, tone, sources for information, approximate word count, and relevance to our readership). Tell us what makes you a good fit. A short bio or resume, with a list of publications, would be appreciated. Please provide two writing samples (Word attachments, PDFs, or URLs are acceptable). Include your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on each page. Finished manuscripts should include a word count. If you would like us to consider previously published work, please note the date and title of the original publication.

We’ll respond by e-mail to your submission, usually within four to six weeks. If we’re interested in further discussing your article idea, we’ll follow up by telephone. Because of the volume of submissions, inquiries about the status of your query will not be answered.

Legal and Financial Kibbles
Payment: Payment for original material ranges from $25 to $250, depending on the length and complexity of the article. Articles range from approximately 325 to 1,500 words. Naples Dog does not pay writers’ expenses. Naples Dog pays upon acceptance of your finished and approved article. All work is subject to editing.

Article rights: Writers will receive a byline for their published piece. Our payment grants Naples Dog Magazine first North American serial and electronic rights, exclusive to us for four months following publication. If the writer wishes to sell subsequent rights, we ask that he or she credit Naples Dog as the first publisher.

Contracts and Invoices
When Naples Dog hires a writer, we will send a contract outlining the terms of the assignment. To process payment upon acceptance of the finished assignment, writers need to return a copy of this contract, accompanied by an invoice noting the writer’s full name, mailing address, Social Security number, amount due, article title, and publication date.
