Hello again everyone. I will be pitching an article soon on the weird methods of watching weight gain/loss. For example, do you always lose or gain weight around your face and neck, so all you have to do is put on your choker necklace once a week to see if there is a difference? Many people who are obsessed with weight will avoid the scales all together, but will find another method of checking, or will watch a certain body part for changes. (more strange or funny, the better)
Any stories, ideas or thoughts on this subject are greatly appreciated. If you used to know someone who did something odd like this, I am interested in that as well. I am also looking for mental health professionals and professionals in the fitness industry that would be willing to interview via phone/e-mail once I have some input, so if you are one, or know one that might be interested, please send them my way.
You can post here or email Mitchell5664@aol.com
All stories and strange habits will be anonymous, and will be very appreciated.
Thanks a bunch in advance.

Well... I don't know if this is weird, because it's what nearly every women *I* know does, but I can always tell if I've gained weight by whatever sits on my waist. My tummy & hips are the first place I gain and the last place I lose; my limbs stay oddly skinny, which irritates the crap out of me, because people will see my still-skinny arms or legs and refuse to believe that I've put on a few pounds. Talk about an apple shape. Anyway.

Also, because women's clothing comes in an annoying variety of sizes - my closet holds anything from size 4-10, so sizes mean nothing - I have a variety of clothing by which to judge my weight. If these pants don't fit, I've gained a pound. If that skirt doesn't fit, it's probably closer to three pounds - etc. If that bra's feeling tight, it's time to do something and FAST.

Oh yes, the different clothing--and different clothing for DIFFERENT KINDS OF WEIGHT GAIN! Bloating from my period gets x clothes, while bloating from carbs I use x clothes for that...water weight the rings come off, real weight gain means changing pants permanently! I dont have a scale and I dont need one. I can tell by my body and which parts of my body--this tells me what KIND of weight gain I am experiencing.

I am also a mental health professional if you need other info. I have treated eating disorders and currently do some hypnotherapy for weight gain with clients.

Thanks for responding. Yeah, I have the clothes thing, too.
What made me think of this is that I don't have a scale either, and even mre than the clothes, the most telling sign on me is the dimple on my face.
As soon as I start losing weight, my dimple becomes extremely prominent. If it becomes less noticeable, I'm in big trouble and it's time to buckle down. I'm hoping I'm not the only one who has an odd one like this.
Willow, once I have enough info from people to get the article going, I will e-mail you if that's okay. An expert's input would help a lot.
Thanks again, can't wait to read more thoughts on this subject.

Well, the dimple thing makes sense! The more, uh, roundness in your face, the less space and depth the dimple has in which to, er, dimple.

(Sheesh. Yanno, sometimes I wonder if I should bother being a writer when I can't find better words.)

Anyway, I guess that's better than judging one's weight by the dimples on their *ahem* derrier.

I read about one lady who sewed a red line and a green line on her seat belt. When she couldn't tighten it to the green line and it got to the red line it was time to diet.

Sharon, Thanks so much! That one is definitely different.

ak, I know what you mean about the word thing, lol. And I am very thankful I haven't had to start judging by dimples anywhere else!

My MIL just told me the first place she gains weight is her tummy, and she wears tight jeans, so when she bends over to tie her shoes, if it hurts her stomach she knows it's time to diet. I thought that one was a little different, too.

I don't know if this is necessarily weight gain, but I can tell if my fitness levels are tapering off by an increase in my resting heart rate. Usually if my fitness levels taper off, if I haven't already started stretching out my clothes, it's not too long before I do.

I'm a figure skater, and I can tell I've gained weight if I have a hard time coming up out of a sitspin ;-)...

....I have been losing weight recently. I have a LONG way to go to my goal, so looking for the usual changes isn't working. However, I have noticed that my wrist bones and ankle bones look a lot bonier lately.

Bonier? Is that a word?

LOL Yes, I think 'bonier' is a word.... :P

The only way I'm truly going to lose weight now is to start working out again. *sighs* Yes, we have a treadclimber but no, I cannot seem to get to the garage to work out. Getting down there to do the laundry is bad enough!

I can tell if I'm gaining or losing mainly by my jeans. If they fit loose that means, well, I'm losing weight. If they are getting snug then I am gaining.

Why is it that we have to gain weight in the winter but are not allowed to hibernate?????
