I am taking a survey to find out what metaphor comes to mind when you think of
waiting--the first one you think of rather than the most obscure. Please respond to
pachirico@aol.com. I'll gladly post the results. Thanks.

My first thought is of being a fly stuck between a window screen and a glass window. You can see where you want to go but can't get there yet.

My first thought was actually occuring at the time I read your post. Listening intently to the coffee pot in the kitchen for the gurgle sound it makes when it is finally done brewing and I can have my coffee to start my morning!

The very first thing that came to mind was from movie GHOST WORLD, last scene where girl is waiting for the bus on a line that was supposedly defunct . . . but then the bus shows up.

A woman, working two jobs to pay off her debts and feed her kids, gets home at 9pm and begins boiling water for her dinner. the water never seems to boil as she sits patiently on the couch.

What came to my mind was "The Telephone Call" by Dorthy Parker. Although she's waiting for a man to call for a date, we're all hoping for that great publisher/producer to call.

One call can change your life; I'm still waiting for mine to ring!

'A watched pot never boils."

I can't remember who said it.
