contains reports about publications that are unprofessional in
dealing with writers, haven't paid writers money that is owed to
them, who have not abided by their contracts, or who have unfair
contract terms. These reports are used by WritersWeekly.com's

Hello Angela,
I’m a freelance writer and editor working with clients in the U.S.,
Canada, U.K., and Ireland. While 2009 was a bad year for many
publications and companies I work with, all but one made every possible
effort to pay and kept in touch to advise when payment would come in
situations where there was a delay. The one that has failed to pay or to
show any respect or courtesy—despite my more than ten years contributing
to its properties—is Regent Media/Here, owners of The Advocate.
I was Editor at Large of Regent Media/Here’s OutTraveler.com and was on
a monthly contract to provide the bulk of the regular content on the
site and its blog, GPS. In June 2009, I was also engaged to provide
branded content for a Netherlands Tourist Board-branded Amsterdam
promotion that continues to be run on
http://www.outtraveler.com/amsterdam/. I accepted this assignment on a
verbal assurance that swift payment would ensue as the money had already
been received by the company. I have not been paid for any of my work on
OutTraveler.com or GPS in August, September, or October, or, ten months
later, for the Amsterdam campaign.
I was also contracted to write columns and features for Advocate.com and
The Advocate, and Regent/Here have not paid me for a July column, for
any of my work on the site in August or September, or for a feature that
ran in August’s print version of The Advocate.
Payments during 2009 were increasingly delayed, but trickled in until
September. I continued to honor my contracts with the company, but
Regent Media/Here did not honor their contracts with me. I contacted
editor Matt Vella at Regent Media/Here on October 23, 2009, to inform
him that I could no longer continue to submit work when such an amount
of money was owing to me. He has never responded. Occasionally my emails
to the company get sympathetic fob-offs, but usually there is no response.
I spent eleven years writing for various incarnations of what eventually
became The Out Traveler, and three years contributing to The Advocate,
Out, Out.com, and Advocate.com. Writers should be warned that this is
how the company treats their longtime contributors. One can only imagine
how low a priority they must consider those more recently associated
with the company.
Regent Media/Here owe me a total of $3560.
Thank you for this opportunity to warn other writers about Regent
Media/Here’s treatment of its freelancers.
