Hi Angela,

I'm a freelancer working regularly for more than a dozen clients, and
although several of them have been a little delayed at times with
payment over the past year, all but one have been communicative and fair
and have ultimately paid up.

The one client that's failed to be forthcoming, communicative, and
decent, and that has failed to pay me, is Regent Media/Here, owners of
The Advocate. The Advocate ran stories of mine in the September,
October, and November issues, all with "pay on publication" contracts.
I've not been paid for any of these, and although I've received
sympathetic correspondence from some of the editorial staff, nobody has
stepped forward to resolve this or put pressure on the publishers to
pay...or at least communicate.

Please, please, please spread the word that writers should not work for
Regent until it settles its back pay with writers owed money, and it
develops a clear and respectful policy for communicating with its
contributors about compensation for their hard work.

If you'd like me to speak on record about this situation, feel free to
contact me. I'm completely willing to work with clients during tough
times to work out extended or flexible payments plans, but being
completely blown off is unacceptable.

They owe a total of $1,850, for three articles.

Thanks for helping get the word out!

Subject: Writers Weekly complaint

From: LH

Hello Angela,

I'm also among the writers who are owed back pay (by Here Media -
formerly Regent Media), and I also freelance for several outlets. I
understand that 2009 was hard on a lot of businesses, but this is the
only media company to greet my queries with absolutely no information on
future payment while still maintaining a high public profile.

I was a contributing editor for OutTraveler.com with a one-year contract
for $1000/month that ran through December 2009. It stipulated that I'd
be paid at the beginning of the following month for the previous month's
work. In the spring, payments started falling behind. The last one I
received was in August for the month of May. As a result of the late
payments, I gave notice and resigned in September. The company still
owes me $3000 for my contract from June-August. I received one small
check for some Advocate.com work in November 2009.

Some members of the editorial staff have been sympathetic, but while I
was told in November 2009 that the company did intend to pay its
contributors there has been no payment since then and there has never
been any estimate of when the full payment might occur. I've not
received any news at all since February 2010.

I'm also still owed for an online piece for Advocate.com, and a kill fee
for something I submitted to The Advocate that didn't run at the last
minute. A piece that I submitted to The Advocate in October was held
until the March 2010 issue and then it ran, so technically that payment
is just now past due. The total I'm owed is $3,962.50, which has been
very hard on my budget.

I have contracts for my online editing work and all of these
assignments, which I'm happy to share.

Best,
LH

Subject: Allegation against Regent Media/Here
Date: Thu, 29 Apr 2010 20:44:35 -0400
From: AM

Hello Angela,

I’m a freelance writer and editor working with clients in the U.S.,
Canada, U.K., and Ireland. While 2009 was a bad year for many
publications and companies I work with, all but one made every possible
effort to pay and kept in touch to advise when payment would come in
situations where there was a delay. The one that has failed to pay or to
show any respect or courtesy—despite my more than ten years contributing
to its properties—is Regent Media/Here, owners of The Advocate.

I was Editor at Large of Regent Media/Here’s OutTraveler.com and was on
a monthly contract to provide the bulk of the regular content on the
site and its blog, GPS. In June 2009, I was also engaged to provide
branded content for a Netherlands Tourist Board-branded Amsterdam
promotion that continues to be run on
http://www.outtraveler.com/amsterdam/. I accepted this assignment on a
verbal assurance that swift payment would ensue as the money had already
been received by the company. I have not been paid for any of my work on
OutTraveler.com or GPS in August, September, or October, or, ten months
later, for the Amsterdam campaign.

I was also contracted to write columns and features for Advocate.com and
The Advocate, and Regent/Here have not paid me for a July column, for
any of my work on the site in August or September, or for a feature that
ran in August’s print version of The Advocate.

Payments during 2009 were increasingly delayed, but trickled in until
September. I continued to honor my contracts with the company, but
Regent Media/Here did not honor their contracts with me. I contacted
editor Matt Vella at Regent Media/Here on October 23, 2009, to inform
him that I could no longer continue to submit work when such an amount
of money was owing to me. He has never responded. Occasionally my emails
to the company get sympathetic fob-offs, but usually there is no response.

I spent eleven years writing for various incarnations of what eventually
became The Out Traveler, and three years contributing to The Advocate,
Out, Out.com, and Advocate.com. Writers should be warned that this is
how the company treats their longtime contributors. One can only imagine
how low a priority they must consider those more recently associated
with the company.

Regent Media/Here owe me a total of $3560.

Thank you for this opportunity to warn other writers about Regent
Media/Here’s treatment of its freelancers.
