WritersWeekly.com has received a complaint about
Ed Hubbard / Witchschool, Inc. / witchschool.com
WritersWeekly.com is a publication that publishes information for
and about freelance writers and other creative professionals.
The publication is the largest-circulation freelance writing ezine
in the world.
As part of that information, WritersWeekly.com publishes a Warnings
section on its website and in its newsletter. This warning section
contains reports about publications that are unprofessional in
dealing with writers, haven't paid writers money that is owed to
them, who have not abided by their contracts, or who have unfair
contract terms. These reports are used by WritersWeekly.com's
subscribers
to decide which publications they should and should not work with.
Your firm has been submitted to us for inclusion in the
WritersWeekly.com Whispers and Warnings section.
Step one of our investigation of this report is to gather all
relevant correspondence between your publication and the person
submitting the complaint so that we can piece together that person's
side of the story. Step one of our investigation has been completed.

THE COMPLAINT
-------------
LM (name not published here but was, of course, provided to the publisher)
alleges you owe her $50 and that you're ignoring her
correspondence.
See allegation under my signature.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
-----------------
The second step in our investigation is to send this communication
to your firm to get its side of the story. If you have evidence
disputing these allegations, or would like to make your own
statement about these allegations for publication in our report, please
email angela@writersweekly.com within two business days.
***All correspondence for our investigations must be in writing and
is subject to publication.***
If you do owe this person money, we strongly suggest you read
this article before responding:

Our report on your firm is scheduled for inclusion in our
publication next Wednesday, though it may appear in our Whispers and
Warnings forum before that time.
If there is no response to these allegations, WritersWeekly.com will
still publish this complaint, but our readers will not be able to
read your side of the story.
We appreciate your prompt response in this matter.

Hi Ang,
There's only $50 left on the account at this point, but the person
responsible (Ed Hubbard, CEO of Witchschool, Inc, which published a
daily
publication that I wrote a column for last year) hasn't returned a
single
phone call or e-mail in the 11+ months since. I should have been
paid but
wasn't. One of his employees did step up and was making payments on the
account, but she suddenly left--fired or quit, I don't know. So I'm
left
with an outstanding balance and Mr. Hubbard still won't even
acknowledge my
attempts to communicate with him.
What's the proper way to add him to your list of complaints so that
other writers won't get sucked in? (their publication no longer pays
writers, but they sometimes advertise for other "paid" positions that
involve writing) I seem to recall seeing some notes on
protocol/steps to take
before filing a complaint but cannot seem to find them again.
Thanks very much, Ang, I don't want others to get taken in and I'm
curious if any of the others that wrote for them when it was a paying
publication still have debts outstanding too...
Sincerely,
[LM]

WRITER SENDS UPDATE
-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Fw: RE: payment
Date: Mon, 23 Mar 2009 13:56:10 -0700 (PDT)
From: LM
Hi Angela,
I heard from the Witch School folks on Saturday. They say they've sent payment in full... I've forwarded copies of the correspondence below and will let you know if payment in fact arrives. Thank you for offering your forum for whispers and warnings to the writing community -- I've always read it but never thought I'd have to use it. I feel certain they never would have gotten back to me if their actions hadn't become publicly known.

Subject: complaint - witchschool.com
Date: Sun, 10 May 2009 11:35:20 -0400
From: [CC]
Greetings,
I did some writing of course materials for Witchschool.com and the
mentoring
program development from about 2001 to March 8, 2004 when I resigned. The
last payment I received from them was thru PayPal June 12, 2005. That
left a balance due me of $750.00.
I have sent emails almost on a monthly basis since to Ed Hubbard and Don
Lewis and various other email addys for witchschool.com administrators with
absolutely no response. I would like to note that I was a student at
witchschool.com and Ed and Don said they would pay me for the course
materials I wrote and the development of the mentoring program. I have not
moved or changed my email addy or phone number - they had all this
information from my student application. Yet they chose not to reply to me
and when they did, it was to promise payment, which never came.
I have kept a record of correspondence.
Thank You,
[CC] |
