I have to do a bunch of mailings. What is the current state of the art with on-line postage, anyone know? Can I print postage from my printer and affix it to the envelope without buying a deveice or paying some kind of monthly fee?

I'm reasonably sure you can, but check with the USPS site.

I thought you had to have a weighing device (didn't think about a monthly fee), but apparently you don't, check out: stamps.com.

Thanks -- stamps.com charges a service charge -- I think it's about $18 per month.

It's hard to figure out from the USPS website exactly what you can do online -- you can order stamps, certainly, but I am looking for something that basically prints out postage that you can affix to your package.

You can print prepaid shipping labels for free when you sell something on Ebay. I imagine you could do something similar at USPS if you know the weight and parameters of your mailings.

On the USPS on line you can only print priority or express mail postage. If you are doing first class or other grades you have to get an account with some other provider (or as mentioned above, be shipping with ebay or paypal).

If you are shipping priority mail for instance though, it is slightly cheaper to print it on USPS than to take it to the post office. You can do the flat rate boxes or your own boxes.
