Brief Guidelines: Thank you for your interest in Indian American Nursing News. Our newsletter is circulated to 30,000 nurses, student nurses, hospital administrators and nursing school faculty in India. The goal of Indian American Nursing News (aka IndiAm) is to bring insight about nursing in the U.S. and about the American culture to Indian nurses and student nurses who are considering immigrating to and working in the U.S. In each issue of IndiAm, we typically publish two articles (1,000 – 2,000 words each) from freelance writers. Writers do not need nursing or medical experience, as our articles cover a wide array of topics, from the nursing shortage in the U.S. and conditions in U.S. hospitals compared to Indian hospitals to U.S. nurses’ salaries and immigration policies. We seek accurate, informative, well-written articles that would be of interest to Indian nurses interested in immigrating to and working in the U.S.

Content

Articles:
All articles should be 1,000 – 2,000 words in length and relate to the following areas:

1. Nursing in India- the current conditions (as compared to other regions in the world), immigration issues, and acclimation to foreign locations.
2. The nursing shortage in the U.S. and ways to alleviate or improve the situation.
3. Current U.S. immigration policy (particularly as it relates to doctors, nurses and physical therapists).
4. Cultural issues and difficulties Indian health care workers face after immigrating to the U.S.

News pieces and commentaries shorter in length will be considered; query first. Interviews with Indian nurses who are currently working in the U.S. or who have worked in the U.S. are encouraged, assuming the interviewee gives permission for his/her story and name to be published in our publication.

Photos:
While we do not typically purchase photos, if the photo is critical to the nature of an article, we will consider purchasing/publishing it. Query the editor with details if your photo supports your article.

Style Guide

Word Choice:
We encourage the use of American style English as opposed to British style, since the majority of our audience needs to learn the American style of English. An example of the two styles is as follows: British use ‘colour’, ‘lift’, and ‘lorry’; Americans use ‘color’, ‘elevator’, and ‘truck’.

Currency:
Since the exchange rate constantly changes, please cite both the Indian Rupee and U.S. Dollar equivalent when referring to any monetary amounts. It doesn’t matter which you show first as long as the corresponding sum follows in parentheses.

Dates
Write out dates in order of: month, day, year (i.e. June 1, 2007).

Format
All articles should use Time New Roman, 12pt font. Facts and figures should be cited in the form of footnotes. Copies of source material should be available to the editor upon request.

Submissions
Queries: Please query first, via email, outlining your proposal and including word count. Based on your query, we may request a sample of your writing and/or your article if the article is already completed. Queries should address these questions:

• What specifically do you plan to tell IndiAm readers?
• How will the information benefit IndiAm readers?
• What sources will you use to make your case? (i.e. interviews, statistical reports, government sources)

Articles/Reprints: If you submit a reprint, please let us know where and when it was published. If you have an article already written that fits our guidelines, you may submit it without querying first. Please let us know if the article has been published or not.

Queries and Articles: should appear in the body of an email. Attachments will not be opened. In the email’s subject line, write “Query” or “Submission”, then state the working title of your proposal/article. At the bottom of your email, please include your name, address and phone number. All queries and submissions should be emailed to indiamarticles - at - gmail.com

Response Times
Regrettably, due to the number of queries and submissions, we cannot respond to or acknowledge all emails. If we are interested in your idea or article, we will contact you. We generally reply to emails within 2 weeks.

Pay
We pay anywhere from $.05 US - $.20 US per word, depending on the subject matter, writer’s experience and whether the article has already been published. Payments are typically made via paypal, given the international base of our freelance writers. If you do not have paypal, other arrangements can be made. Payment is made one month following publication.

Copies of IndiAm
To obtain a sample issue of IndiAm, please send your request to the editor, via email.
We will be happy to send you a pdf version via email.

Thank you for your interest in writing for IndiAm!
