THE PROGRESSIVE POPULIST
A Journal from America¹s Heartland Writer Guidelines
The Progressive Populist is a journal that
believes people are more important than
corporations. Its editor is Jim Cullen in
Manchaca, Texas (just outside of Austin). The
twice-monthly tabloid journal is published in
Storm Lake, Iowa.
The Progressive Populist carries articles and
columns by progressive and populist writers, as
well as interviews and texts of populist speeches
and essays. It reports from the heartland as
well as Washington, D.C., on issues of interest
to workers, small businesses and family farmers
and ranchers.
The Progressive Populist provides a vehicle
for organizing a populist movement with
progressive values. It amplifies those populist
voices and tells people how they can make a
difference in the political, economic and social
life of their community.
The Progressive Populist is an independent
journal. Although the editors speak through
editorials and political endorsements, the
journal as a whole has no partisan political
line. Writers are responsible for their own work
and in publishing them we do not necessarily
agree with them.
Mainly, our mission is to give progressive
populists a forum, to give our readers the news
and views they may not be getting from their
corporate-owned daily, and to deflate some
pompous plutocrats along the way.
We aim to make the Progressive Populist the
antidote to the monopoly daily news, throw a
lifeline to progressives who feel like they are
stranded in a sea of mossbacks and right-wingers,
and maybe play a role in reviving political
debate.
What We Look For
If you want to know what kind of articles we
look for, please read our journal. There is no
better way to develop a feel for our concerns,
interests and style than by reading The
Progressive Populist. The business office will
be happy to take your subscription order by phone
or by mail. You also may get a sense of The
Progressive Populist by browsing our web-page on
the Internet at www.populist.com.
We cover politics and economics. We are
interested not so much in the dry reporting of
campaigns and elections, or the stock markets and
GNP, but in how big business is exerting more
control over both the government and ordinary
people¹s lives, and what people can do about it.
We look at the relationship between private
interest and the public good. We look at ways
citizens can make corporations as well as
government more accountable. We also are
interested in stories that tell us what life is
like in your town or region.
Our average news feature runs 1,000 to 1,200
words long. Shorter dispatches also are
encouraged. The emphasis is on dateline news
from around the country; the writing must be
succinct, factual, and news-oriented. Art,
charts and graphics that help tell the story are
welcome.
We are not much interested in ³sound-off²
articles about state or national politics,
although we accept letters to the editor. We
prefer to see more ³journalistic² pieces, in
which the writer does enough footwork to advance
a story beyond the easy realm of opinion. The
ideal length for these is 700 to 800 words.
We also use book reviews. We review books of
interest to our audience, generally having to do
with politics or economics. The best length is
500 to 700 words. When submitting a review,
please include the publishing information:
Title, author, number of pages, year published,
city of publisher, name of publisher and price.
We also can use shorter reviews of books and
magazine articles in our ³Public Prints²
Department.
We almost always need to have a draft version
of a finished manuscript to look at before we can
say whether we will be using a piece or not
unless we are working with established writers
whose work we know. Written queries and
telephone queries are worthwhile in letting the
writer know if we have covered a subject recently
or if we have assigned a topic to somebody else.
Deadlines
We print the issue usually the second and
fourth Wednesdays of the month, with combined
issues in July and December. We need to have
manuscripts in our hands by the first and third
Wednesdays of the month. (Please keep at least a
two-week lead time in mind when writing news
stories or other dated material.)
We expect manuscripts to be typed (preferably
double-spaced). Our style generally conforms
with The Associated Press Stylebook. We are sorry
that we cannot return manuscripts that are not
accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.
Formats for Submission
It is easiest to submit articles by email, and
it helps us keep track of the articles. If you
send an article as an attachment, please save it
in ³Rich Text Format (RTF)² or plain text
(ASCII). Send e-mail to editor@populist.com.
Photography and Art
We use some freelance photography and
illustration. Photographers and artists are
welcome to make themselves known to us.
Last and Least
The worst thing about contributing to the
Progressive Populist is that our budget does not
allow us to pay freelancers the rates we would
like. Our average payment for an original
feature is $50. For shorter dispatches and
reprints of columns we pay $10-$25. Payment for
book reviews is $10-$25. For photos and drawings
we pay $15-$50. We¹re sorry we can¹t afford now.
We pay upon publication for first-time print
rights (which includes our controlled-circulation
email version and our Web site and licensed
databases). If you wish to reserve online
rights, you can keep your story off our web site
and restrict it from licensed databases.
