THE COMPLAINT

From: MPM
Subject: Whispers & Warnings
Date sent: Thu, 18 May 2006 17:47:23 -0400
Dear Angela:
I¹m an avid reader of your weekly e-zine and I was hoping that I would
never have to contact you about a non-payment issue. My client owes
me $480. I was hired at $40 per hour to write copy for Myra Trigueno,
an event planner, who wanted to create a new website.
We had a really good rapport so I stupidly trusted her without getting a
deposit before starting work. Well, I was about half-way through writing
copy for her site so I invoiced her for 12 hours, which at $40 per hour, is
$480.
Well, suddenly, and I¹m not making this up, my 27-year-old client was
diagnosed with cancer and had a bone marrow transplant and chemo. I
haven¹t heard from her since and that was on March 12th. I sent her a
second invoice through the mail on March 28th and never heard back. I¹ve
been so nice and sympathetic to her situation but I don't if I've been
played.
Here are the facts:
* Myra Trigueno contacted me on January 7, 2006 and asked for my
copywriting rates (she found my website through google searching)
* She agreed to $40 per hour on January 12, 2006
* I invoiced her for 12 hours of work on February 19,2006
* She emailed me on February 21st and said that I would receive payment
on March 3rd
* I never received payment. On March 12th, I emailed her and asked her
about payment and she responded that she's been really sick. That was the
last
I've heard from her.
I have emailed her, phoned her and sent her letters.
Thanks,

Dear (MPM),
I looked at your site and wanted to know if I could have a copywriting
quote for the new venture that I am beginning. I am starting an event
planning company geared toward busy professional women who don't have the
time to plan events. The writing content I seek is for a website I am in
the process of constructing. I'm looking for a writer who can appeal to
this group of women in a smart and intellectual way while offering a very
warm delivery that is relatable to all. Its very important for my
site to have personality and style.
Let me know if this is a project you are interested in learning more about
and if not any referrals you can provide are much appreciated.

Tell me a little bit more about your business and yourself (where do you

in your website and how much copywriting would you need from me?
Thanks for contacting me!

Hi (MPM),
I apologize for the delay. I've been a bit busy with presentations and
shows.
About Me:
I was born in Texas and have lived in New York for a large part of my
life. I live in Riverdale to be exact. I went to Penn State for Business
Management minor Marketing. Then I worked as a Special Events Manager at
Anheuser Busch followed by a long term business consulting position at
Pepsi Cola North America. I have a great family: parents and 3 sisters. I
am single and in my 20's so I'm still living my life in a Sex and the City
kind of way. I gather with my girlfriends and we catch up on
everything about our lives. I'm pretty independent but have a spoiled way
about me. I love to laugh and be around people I care about in a
comfortable setting. There is a little spice to me as I believe should be
to every woman so ocassionally I'll shock even myself.
Since I can remember I've always liked to entertain. First birthdays for
family members and then events for friends. I've been to a lot of boring
or bad functions and have often thought how could this event be better or
more enjoyable. I really got the opportunity to experiment and event plan
when I worked for Anheuser Busch. I developed different skills through
orchestrating movie premieres, going to several accounts and setting up
for events, developing exciting programs surrounding the
product that consumers/partygoers could buy into. I found out what worked
and what didnt in several target audiences. I just fell in love with that
portion of my job. Throu
ghout the years I found it difficult to dedicate myself completely to
event/party planning because I'm pretty good at what I do now which is
Merchandising and Marketing Man
agement. There was definitely a period of confusion. I asked myself if I
could make a substantial living knowing doing what I love. Am I willing to
make
the sacrifices needed to succeed. Fear kept telling me know but I just
couldnt escape the joy and pleasure I got from party planning.
Now, I'm ready to make sacrifices. I'm going to take the necessary steps
to begin in a strong way and see where that takes me.
About the Busisness Concept
Many young professional women in their 20's 30's and 40's want to look
like they have it together. We want to have fabulous events but not do the
background work to ensure
that the picky friend who always has something to say about everything is
content and having a good time. Every single one of my friends like most
women tries to pull it of
f herself. How hard can it be right? Wrong. So much goes into making
parties and events a success. I want to be the name on every fabulous
woman's rolodex
when they want to throw a great event. These professional women would get
me, a woman who has thrown fabulous events like the ones at the Salt Lake
City Winter Olympics an
d private parties and concerts for Rap stars and famous comedians. They
would get a great negotiator and the buying power of a successful event
planning company instead of
the prices and the problems that come with being inexperienced.
If my site were a person I would describe her as young, spirited,
beautiful, edgy, down to earth, intelligent, quick witted, experienced and
fun.
I'm not looking for anything too text heavy, but there should be immediate
interest. Sites have an average of 7 seconds to reach a consumer before
the consumer moves on to
something else. I am looking for impactful words, that resonate with women
and move them to action by looking through the site and then picking up
the phone. I believe the
words are the heart and soul of the website so I'm definitely looking for
something fresh and different.
I'm open to any suggestions and any creative thoughts you may have to
offer.
The designer is still working on the layout and story board. There are
several sections: Homepage, Services, Private Parties, Weddings, Corporate
Events, Contact Us
Let me know if there is anything else.
Thanks,
Myra

Hi (MPM),
I really enjoyed reading the article you sent. It was personable so the
reader felt like they were getting to know you. That in my opinion makes
for good reading. I know ex
actly what you mean about getting what you want and not being afraid to
let it show.
· In terms of the name of the company I was thinking of branding my name
"Myra Trigueno" and using it to represent my business.
· For the color scheme I enclosed a copy of my logo. I'm not sure if I'm
going to keep the color but it is a strong body of work. It encompases
what I believe should be a g
reat event: Fun, creative, beautiful and whimsicle. Tell me what you
think?
· There will be some flash but very little. I could just picture someone
being turned off by how long it takes an image to load. I don't want to
turn people off because the
loading is too slow.
· I did find your website by doing a few searches. I knew I wanted a
woman, young and talented. They had to be able to relate to my vision and
see themselves as the very wo
men I'm targeting. I knew it would take tapping into the fun flirty side
of being young, smart and beautiful. I also wanted a copywriter who could
capture the sentiments of
this target audience through words. In many ways it has to be more for
them than just an event planning website. They have to feel secure and
trust my
abilities to make their vision for a great event come true.
In terms of quotes I'm comfortable with 40 dollars an hour. I'm not quite
sure how many hours it would take you to complete but if you give me an
account of how many hours
you've dedicated to the project regularly then it will be easier to keep
track of the amounts I'd like to spend.
If you have any writing samples available I would be interested in reading
your work.
Thanks for the encouraging words. I will be placing a phone call to you
tomorrow afternoon if thats alright. I would definitely like to chat.
Thanks,
Myra

I signed out of my yahoo account and got a little lazy, so I decided to

The weddings page looks good I just looked at the welcome page and read a
couple of words I wasn't sure about and would want changed. I apologize if
this poses any inconven
ience to you.
The first word I singled out was "sings." I don't think that is a powerful
or descriptive enough word to describe a good color scheme. I don't
necessarily have a word to re
place it but for me when something works well together there is that wow
factor, and things just seem to be vivid and come alive, its as if you've
found what was missing an
d nothing can go wrong now. It makes me excited.
The second word is "and" seems a little weird for the beginning of this
sentence and for me takes a little bit from the electrifying feeling of
knowing that you too are a g
uest at your own event.
Let me know what you think.
Sincerely,
Myra
P.S.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm doing a little better and staying
optimistic.

Hey Myra,
Glad you liked my weddings page copy. As far as the welcome page, a little
word changes are perfectly fine. I’ll tinker with it and find a better
word for “sings”. As far a
s the word “and” I could reword the sentence a little, because if you just
begin the sentence “You want to be there with a drink in your hand” I
don’t think it flows well f
rom the previous paragraph. Maybe something like “You’ll be there with a
drink in your hand ...”
I’ll start working on the other pages this week, starting with the vision
process. Things have been hectic for me lately. My business has taken off
faster than I ever imagi
ned (not that that’s something to complain about!)
I’ve been keeping track of my hours spent on your job and I’ve tallied 12
so far, so I’m going to invoice you this week through the mail. Those
hours were spent transcribin
g phone interviews with you (I’ve recorded our phone conversations to
ensure I capture exactly what you want), brainstorming ideas, writing &
revising copy and researching
the market. Now that I have a better sense of what you’re looking for
through experience, the rest of the website should come together easier.
I’m happy to hear you’re feeling a little better. Keep staying optimistic
– you have a lifetime of success and happiness to look forward to!

Hi (MPM),
I will refine the list of services and then send you back a clean
version.
I was actually thinking of removing the corporate page and replacing it
with the social events page. The reason for that is studies show that
corporate spending on event do
llars has gone down and competition has gotten fierce with other agencies
as well as in-house planning firms. Studies also show that social event
planning has gone up and f
or a start-up its the best way to penetrate the business. I figured there
is another way to get around that and of course let me know what you
think. The
target market is the same professional women. If great event planning
relationships are built with these professionals while I'm handling their
personal events then I belie
ve referrals to influential friends and their own company will follow. Its
like gaining entrance through the back door. Fact is I am start-up and my
resources are limited.
Many strong event planning organizations can cut costs were I can't afford
to as a start-up. As business grows I figure I will need to add that page
but I
must ask myself if its a priority now. As I read the copy we have so far
and see how the tone and spirit of the website are taking shape I'm not
exactly sure the answer is
yes. Let me know what you think.

Myra

Hi Myra,
How are you doing? From your phone call last night, I gather not too good.
I’m worried about you!
OK, I’ll wait for you to refine the list of services. I see your point
about the corporate page. I reread my copy so far. I think the tone and
spirit hints at a corporate p
age, but it could be left off for now. But, while we’re writing the copy
now, maybe we should just go for it (but then again, I’m NOT a practical
person :)
When I launched my website, I didn’t include a “marketing & PR” page. I
wasn’t sure I wanted to get into that when my love is with journalism.
When I decided to give it a t
ry and showcase my work in both marketing and journalism venues, my
husband and I created a “marketing” corporate page. My website became a
solid mix between, what you woul
d call, “whimsical and practical.” That is when my business exploded in an
amount of time that blows me away, quite frankly.
Point is: if your clients hire you for personal event planning and then
see your corporate page as well, maybe that portion will take off faster
than you imagined. Bottom l
ine: it couldn’t hurt to put it up. I could focus more on the social
events page and then keep the corporate page brief ... Listening to
studies and stats about your indust
ry is smart, but listening to your gut is smarter. So, what does it say?
About the social events page: what specific copy do you want me to focus
on? I know you said birthdays, anniversaries, tastings. I could play
around with it (and I already
have a feel for the tone) but I need to know more about what you’re after.

Hi Myra,
We have obtained copies of emails where you promised payment
to (MPM). You hired her. She worked for you. You promised
payment was forthcoming. You clearly owe her for the work performed.
Not paying for work is illegal. What has changed between the time
you promised payment and now?
