Living Aboard Writers Guidelines

Living Aboard is a lifestyle magazine for people who live on their boats
-
or dream of doing so. We seek articles on any subject related to living
aboard a boat. We want to hear how you made the decision to move aboard,
how it changed your life, and what your experience has been living
aboard.

What have you done to make your boat more livable? How do you deal with
the daily problems of living aboard? We like practical information or
personal anecdotes. We do not publish poetry or fiction.

If you are on-line, we would like you to submit your manuscripts via the
Internet. Send to <editor - AT - livingaboard.com>. It is best if you send your
article in the body of an e-mail message, but if you send your
submission as an attachment to an e-mail message, please include your name in the
file name of the document. If you do not have Internet access, please submit
your articles on disk or CD. If you cannot send your manuscript on a
disk or via e-mail, it should be clearly typed or printed on a letter-quality
printer and mailed. Please don't send the article via fax. If you send
hard copy, be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, and title
of the article on each page and remember to number the pages. Articles
should run between 1,000 - 2,000 words. We can also use short, filler-type
items of from 100 to 300 words.

Photos are a big plus. Black and white photos reproduce best, but color
prints or slides are fine. The important thing is that they are of high
contrast and sharply focused. We assume we can keep all photos unless
you specify otherwise. If you want your photos returned, please clearly
label each photo with your name and address. If you send digital photos, we
need the images to be at least 200 dpi resolution and no smaller, preferably
larger, than 3 inches in width. Acceptable formats are .gif, .jpg, and
.tif. Please do not use indexed color. Keep in mind that we will print
your photos in black and white and converting them to black and white
yourself saves file space. Include your name in the file name of the
photo; e.g., "Smith.jpg". Don't forget to send us a caption along with your
photo.

The best way to do that is at the end of your article, listing the
photos you are sending along with captions.

Please include a short biography - no more than 50 words or so. You
might include information such as previous publications (if any), type/name of
boat, home port, retired or still working, when you moved aboard (or
maybe you are still dreaming), plans for cruising, etc. We will also need a
photo of you for our contributors' page.

Unless you specify otherwise, we assume first North American rights on
all manuscripts we receive. We acknowledge receipt of all manuscripts but
if you don't hear from us within a few weeks, please feel free to call or
write to check on the status of your submission.

We pay an honorarium of $.05/word, $5/photo, $50 cover photo, upon
publication.
