Re: Airleaf Publishing / airleaf.com / Bookman Publishing /
Bookman Marketing / bookmanmarketing.com
This is a lengthy one, albeit entertaining!
Airleaf Publishing used to be called Bookman Marketing. If you recall, we've been spammed by them on numerous occasions (they continued to spam us even after we complained) and we received several other complaints about their spamming tactics as well. Please note that they never responded to any of our complaints about their spams...never responded to us at all...until now.
You can read complaints about them at these links:
http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=922
http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=4145
http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=3865
http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?t=3827
http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=964
For this complaint, the publisher was hired to promote two books to traditional publishers on behalf of this author. The author paid them $398 for this service in October. The author claims no work was done on his behalf and that many of his emails were ignored.
Interestingly enough, when we approached Airleaf with these complaints, they failed to address our primary concerns and instead started critizing our businesses (see emails below). Also, when I asked about their history of spamming, they ignored that part of the discussion as well.
Despite their ridiculous comments and Brien's art for avoiding the topic at hand,
they did finally refund the author's money last week.
Since Airleaf has claimed I can't republish their emails (you'll probably have an
opinion why why when you read the paraphrased responses below), I will paraphrase what they sent. And, if Airleaf / Bookman wants me to publish their actual emails, I'd be happy to. But, I'm not obligated to post the libel he wrote about us.
Due to this firm's long record of spamming (spam is illegal!) and because of this incident (why didn't they just refund his money when he first complained?), we recommend ALL authors avoid this outfit.

WritersWeekly.com has received a complaint about:
Airleaf Publishing / airleaf.com / Bookman Publishing /
Bookman Marketing / bookmanmarketing.com
WritersWeekly.com is a publication that publishes information for and
about freelance writers. The publication is the largest-circulation
freelance writing ezine in the world.
As part of that information, WritersWeekly.com publishes a Warnings
section on its website and in its newsletter. This warning section
contains reports about publications that are unprofessional in dealing
with writers, have refused to pay writers money owed to them, who have
not abided by their contracts, or who have unfair contract terms.
These reports are used by WritersWeekly.com's subscribers
to decide which publications they should and should not work with.
Your firm has been submitted to us for inclusion in the
WritersWeekly.com Whispers and Warnings section.
Step one of our investigation of this report is to gather all relevant
correspondence between your publication and the person submitting the
complaint so that we can piece together that person's side of the story.
Step one of our investigation has been completed.
Patrick B. (author's name removed for publication but provided to
the publisher, of course) alleges he paid you $398 in October to submit his
book information to publishers and that, despite the fact that his
card was charged more than two months ago, no work has been
done by Airleaf. He also alleges numerous emails were ignored by
Airleaf and submitted a copy of a very unprofessional and rude email
he received from Airleaf when they did response. See copies of
correspondence below.
Depite an email received by Mr. B. this week claiming work
on his books would begin after the holiday, he no longer trusts your
firm and requests the immediate refund of his $398.
-----------------
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
-----------------
The second step in our investigation is to send this communication to
your firm to get its side of the story. If you have evidence
disputing these allegations, or would like to make your own
statement about these allegations for publication in our report,
please email angela@writersweekly.com within two business days.
All correspondence for our investigations must be in writing and is
subject to publication.
Our report on your firm is scheduled for inclusion in our publication
next Wednesday.
If there is no response to these allegations, WritersWeekly.com will
still publish this complaint, but our readers will not be able to read
your side of the story.
We appreciate your prompt response in this matter.

Hi Brien:
Maybe you can help me. I ordered two of your book specials at the sales
price through Dawn Rogers. Our board of trustees would like some
acknowledgement of the purchases but I don't have this, although I
notice the two payments were taken from my credit card. I have other
people who are interested in taking advantage of the sales you offer but they are
reluctant to do so given the fact I have nothing on paper to acknowledge
said purchases. I have called and emailed Dawn Rogers several times but
the girl tells me she is out to lunch. I left messages on her voice mail
but got no response. I hope everything is all right but the trustees
keep bugging me. I would appreciate someone helping me and letting me know if
everything is okay. I don't think it is good business practice to
ignore customers, do you?
Thank you very much.

publisher. I also have on my credit card a second entry for 199.00 to
cover the cost of promotion letters for Michael's book. He is autistic

promotion questionairre be sent to me directly. Dawn knows all this

Wow! You should ge your facts straight. I spent two $199.00 items, one
for me and one for Michael O. who, if you read your emails, is
autistic and awaiting some kind of response. My problem is not that you
haven't gotten me a best seller but that you people do not answer your
emails or letters and treat your customers like fleas. As I told you in
my letter, we are not used to dealing with phantoms, mutes and uncivil
people. Michael still hasn't received anything for his book on poetry
and as I told you, I am his advocate, I paid his bill and I am the one whom
he turns to for answers. We paid his fee in October and here it is already
December and not a word from you people. Wow! almost 400.00 dollars
taken and nothing to show for it. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-

ANOTHER COMPLAINT WRITERSWEEKLY RECEIVED ABOUT AIRLEAF:
Date sent: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 08:13:34 -0800 (PST)
From: Julie Ann
Subject: Airleaf Publishing--have you ever dealt with them?
Last week we received a letter from a new company called Airleaf Publishing that really struck home the danger of some of these places to unsuspecting writers.
The letter was a glowing pitch. They claimed that "While we have had great success placing thousands of books in hundreds of bookstores, we have not yet achieved our original goal: to market a national bestseller that is sold in every bookstore."
They went on to say that "after careful review and great consideration" our book had the potential to be that national bestseller. They said our book was "not only engagingly written but it also features themes that we believe will resonate with readers nationwide."
For the price of only $7500 (don't worry, they can make payment arrangements), they promise two 15-minute interviews on a nationally syndicated radio show, a television appearance, ten face-to-face meetings with television and film producers, a telemarketer to call bookstores for you, etc etc.
What makes this whole thing ridiculous is that this pitch wasn't for any of our fiction works. It was for the Neiyar: Land of Heaven and the Abyss campaign setting! Obviously, they had no clue that the potential "bestseller" was in fact a game rulebook.
Visiting their website proved equally upsetting. One of the promotional services they offer is that they will write an "impartial" book review for you and print it at various review sites. Yes, for only $399, they will write a review of your book and post it for you. For $450 you can purchase contact information for Oprah, Larry King, and other TV personalities. Notice this is just for the information (which can be found easily enough for free via Google).
Talking around to other publishers revealed a little more. The publishers of the magazine Gryphonwood received the identical letter FOR THEIR MAGAZINE, and it was addressed not to the publishers, but to one of the author's who had been interviewed in the magazine. "Careful review and great consideration" indeed.
What's worse, research into the company found that they were also preying on SCHOOLCHILDREN and their families through their Voice of the Class program. Targeting schools, they will publish collections of student stories and pay the school 12% of the total sales. And the storefront to "purchase" books provides no information regarding page count, contents, or anything. An e-mail sent to them requesting more information was returned due to a delivery failure. The only way to get information is to provide a phone number so that they can call you.
I'm sharing with with you so you can share this information with your readers. If you'd like, I can even fax you the letter I received from them. These sorts of predators drive me crazy, because while I can laugh about it, many writers new to the industry will end up taking out second mortgages thinking this is their chance to get a best seller. If you have any questions regarding this, just let me know.

Hi Brien,
I never denied my POD connection. As I stated in my previous

I intend to post your snide comments about us on the website, but
will remove the lies. Your company has a pretty bad reputation for
sending unprofessional emails to authors and it seems today's exchange
is no exception. You really should learn how to count to 10 before
firing off an unprofessional and childish email.
Ours isn't the only website that's warning authors about
your unprofessional company. There are numerous complaints about
you online, and they deal with a lot more than just your spamming tactics.
I'm not publishing vicious attacks. I'm protecting authors from an
unprofessional firm that breaks promises and breaks the federal
and state spam laws.
Any company that claims to know how to market books, but resorts
to the most unethical (and illegal) method of reeling in unsuspecting
authors, by using spam, should be avoided.

Despite the fact that he paid only $199 for a $450 service and that we

We feel that it is a little unreasonable to expect Airleaf to review his
book, write a promotion, gain his approval for the promotion, send the
promotion, receive inquiries, follow up on inquiries and have final
results all within the eight weeks.
From this point forward I am instructing all of our employees to explain

$398.00 for two books, one is mine and the other book was by an autisitc boy,

Both books were sent to Dawn Rogers in October after the
two fees of $199.00 were paid via credit card. Dawn Rogers was the one who
took the money out of the card. I paid for Michael's book because he is
