Greetings everyone. I'm looking for feed back here. I'm an absolute newbie author. I've just had my first book published by the good people at Booklocker.com. I am absolutely pleased with everything that Angela and Richard have done for me.

My problem (and it is my problem, litteraly) is that I am impatient, to the extreme. I created the web page and used the key word tool so that I could build in popular key words into the page. By my estimate, I should be getting 40 mil hits per month. I put a hit counter in the page so that I could verify the hits. (Wanted some idea of how it was doing.)

The reality is that I'm doing good to get 4 or 5 total hits a day.

So one of my questions is. "What's a reasonable expectation of hits/activity on my web page?"

And similarly: What sort of activity should I expect on the Booklocker page?

I am seeing goose eggs so far.

Any feedback is greatly appreaciated.

Tex

Hi Tex,
First, welcome to the forum, and congratulations on the book.

I'm not sure I can address your specific question, but here are some quick thoughts.

1. Search engines continually hunt for websites to add to their indexes, but there may be a lag of many days (or weeks?) between when a website is established and when a given search engine realizes it exists.

2. Having a website appear high in the results of a web search doesn't guarantee that the person will proceed to your website. Your website needs to have content that draws their interest and that appears with the search results.

3. Your website's home page seems to contain a lot of unnecessary white space and no content that's intended to pique the viewer's interest. The viewable portion of a web page should be regarded as a scarce resource, like space in a newspaper. The first window of material needs to include something to induce the viewer to either scroll down or click on one of the page's sublinks.

4. I noticed several typos on your website's home page. Being that your novel is "self-published," the reader does not know whether your manuscript was scrutinized to the extent that those of trade publishers tend to be. Therefore, all of your writing that concerns your novel should be immaculate, so that the viewer might infer that this same care was given to your novel.

Hope that helps,
Dave

It probably won't answer your questions, but there was one thing that popped out at me immediately when I looked at your home page:
if you leave your site address the way it is, it'll come off to a lot of people that your name is actually "Ortex Graves."
it might confuse people who are looking for your book.
