Does a writer get charged when they are paid through PayPal? If I decide to sign up for PayPal do I sign up with a Personal Account?

Thanks,
Barb Chandler

Hi Barb,
My understanding is that PayPal's "personal account" is intended for transferring funds for reasons other than work. This account type didn't used to get charged to receive funds. I don't know whether that is still true.

For receiving work-related funds, the two account types were (and might still be) "premier" (which is what I have) and "business." Both incur a fee when receiving funds from most sources. The only exception I know of is where the funds are being taken out of a PayPal balance. The fee begins at around 4% for small amounts and gradually decreases as the amount gets larger.

If you contemplate getting an account at PayPal, you probably would want to first read some of the information posted at its website.

Best,
Dave

Paypal charges a small fee each time someone sends money to your account (much like businesses are charged when you use a debit machine at their store), and when you withdraw money from your Paypal account to your bank account, there is a $0.50 fee unless you are transferring a balance over $150, then there is no service charge. If you are writing under your personal name and not a business name, you can setup a personal Paypal account for your writing services; if you are writing under a business name, then you would have to open a Paypal business account.

Hope this helps. :)
