Hi Kathy,

There's nothing Angela can really do. She can let you know about a bad publisher, but when individuals illegally post their own copy of my ebook, the only thing anyone can do is try to get it removed from the offending site.

But Angela does know about my most recent victory.

Two months ago I came across a guy who created a website that was nothing but a page of links to illegal downloads of PDF books. Not only my book, but books by Ray Bradbury, Orson Scott Card and many others. I sent DMCA notices to the hosting company and domain name registrar. I also notified several of the authors. A few days later a person from the hosting company (Tucows.com) contacted me, and within a day the page of links was gone, but the links were still active. I contacted the hosting company again telling them the links were active. A few more emails went back and forth, and within a week the entire website was gone, and the links were dead (they deleted the PDF files from the server). Tucows.com was very helpful in dealing with this issue.

Some of the authors I had contacted thanked me and said they would notify their publishers about the offending site.

Chock up one for the little guy!

Have Fun,
Jeff

Jeff,

I have a question for you. How do you find out who the host is of a website? I wrote copy for www.caraccessories.com that is currently on their About page. They have never paid for it despite my repeated attempts to collect. I have since demanded that they remove the copy but they haven't done that either. I would like to give your idea a try, but don't know how to find out who the host is of the site www.caraccessories.com. Any suggestions?

Chip

Hi Chip,
One website that I believe provides such information is whois.domaintools.com . An internet search would probably reveal many others.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Here's a link to a webpage noting that a hosting company may be held liable for failing to address complaints alleging that its users infringed copyright.

http://www.citmedialaw.org/legal-guide/ ... er-content

If a hosting company claims helplessness, perhaps it is unaware of its possible liability under the law. (Disclosure: I am not trained in the law.)
