Here's a situation I never thought I'd be in! I'm looking for an agent to represent my fiction manuscript, and yesterday I got a request for a full manuscript, but the agency asks for exclusive consideration. I knew that when I queried them, so that's fine.

However, a few hours later another agency I'd queried responded, asking for a synopsis and three chapters. I know I need to honor my agreement with the first agency, but I'm not sure how to handle the agent asking for a partial. I don't want to burn a bridge, because I need to keep my options open if the first agent passes on my work. Should I tell them I'm waiting on a response from an agent who asked for exclusive consideration? Do I just wait, then mail in my material if the first agent passes? This is some agent etiquette I never thought I'd have to deal with, so any advice would be appreciated. Thank you!!

I thought I responded to this. I guess age is catching up.

If I were in the position you've fortunately found yourself in, I'd check my notes to see how long the first agent asked for, then call the second agent and talk over the situation with him or her.
