A quick update on my advertising experiences thus far: facebook advertising rocks; it tripled my traffic and my blog comments also increased significantly. Plus, I also started receiving personal e-mails from writers who told me they found my blog through facebook.

Google Adwords, on the other hand, sucked up $75, and I received traffic but no results, and only a quarter of the traffic I have been receiving from facebook.

Plus, the convenience of setting up a facebook ad and showcasing it to your target market is so ridiculously convenient and easy. Definitely the better way to go if you want to build a following.

Thanks for the info. This backs up what I've heard elsewhere.

Have Fun,
Jeff

I find contributing guest posts to good blogs with backlinks to your own blog is a great way to promote your own blog. Something I just started that seems to be working slowly :)

I'm with you annabelle07! Guest posting is something that I've just started doing too, and I think if I were to contribute guest posts on a more regular basis, that I could build a steady stream of new followers.

Another promotional idea that has been working well for me has been participating in blog tours for authors. I post an interview with the author and a review of their book, and the publishing company links to your posts during their author's blog tour. It's been very beneficial so far!

That's actually very interesting! Never heard of people doing that before...pretty cool...:)

It's quite enjoyable, and you get to practice two forms of writing (if you so choose to do both): book reviewing and interviewing.

If it's something that you're interested in, I wrote a post about how to write a book review, and at the bottom there's places to go to participate in book reviews with descriptions of each:

I just started an Adwords program for my new ebook, http://www.PortfolioEbook.com on how photographers can make a portfolio.

I had a $100 coupon that I used. I rewrote the ad 3 times in the first week, each time getting more hits. In three weeks I've gone through about $30, my ad has been shown about 25,000 times, I've had about 35 clicks on my ad and no sales.

I know that some people really make Adwords work, but for people like myself who are casual users, I'm not real impressed.

Have Fun,
Jeff

That sounds like a good book. I've put one up on digital photography for storytellers, but...my marketing skills on-line aren't too sharp. Too, I spent the past week flat on my back in the local VA hospital have a blocked bowel changed back to normal. Not a fun eight days or so, and it rode right in on my step into the second stage physical therapy for my left knee replacement at the end of June. Thus, I've been a mess for going on four months now, and am not too sharp yet.

I'm working on two more Kindle books. I just need to be able to get out and shoot some blinking photos! Actually, one is a small project book that I know will sell, but I'm in no shape yet to be using a tablesaw and similar gear, so I stay out of the shop.

Hmm I stopped using FB ads a while back because I did not see much results. Perhaps I should look at it again. I think where you place ads and if you will be successful depends a lot upon your audience.
