Hello,
I need to update my computer. I currently use a desktop PC with Windows XP. What do you fellow freelancers use? I'm thinking about switching to an Apple computer. Any recommendations?

Hi Pamela,
Welcome to the forum.

I hesitated to reply because I've had far too little direct experience with Apple machines to offer an informed recommendation. My work as a freelance editor constrains me to using Windows (in part so that I can provide technical help to clients who aren't that familiar with Microsoft Word).

Are you constrained to choosing between Microsoft and Apple, or could you also consider non-proprietary systems (such as linux)?

Dave,

Thank you for your reply to my topic. I'm new at posting on forums, so I hope I'm doing this right.
I'm most familiar with Microsoft and have had no experience with linux. I know very little about Apple, except that it's not as virus-prone as other systems (and my sister likes her new Apple laptop) so that's why I'm considering a switch to Apple. My concerns would be learning the new word processor for my writing and transferring all my Microsoft Word files to an Apple system.

Pam

Hi Pam,
I'm not a moderator or an administrator at this site, but I have found your posts irreproachable.

In case you haven't explored it, I imagine there's considerable material on the internet regarding a user's migrating from Microsoft Word to the Apple counterpart. To test this, I entered the keywords "microsoft word to apple computer" in a search engine, which returned apparently useful links on the first page of results.
