Hi everybody,

An entire list of suspicious members is using the same IP address on this forum and we suspect they're all the same person. Therefore, we have banned an entire block of IP addresses coming from AOL.

If you're an AOL user and you're trying to post but are getting the "banned" message, please contact Angela via email so she can investigate and reinstate you. Contact angela (at) writersweekly.com by email only (no private messaging permitted for this) and give her your username, your full name, your website URL and your business name.

-Angela

Angela, when I worked as a moderator on a board we were told by admin to ignore ANY IP number from AOL, as the system did not work when trying to trace people through an AOL IP number.

The reason is that AOL IP numbers are NOT used merely for one person. According to an IP check I ran on the board, over 150 people were all listed as having the same AOL IP number! It looked suspicious, but wasn't. :)

I work in telecom. All AOL users appear to come from the same IP address in
Virginia. Most other IP addresses can be tracked to a geographic area.

I use a service by Zinester to post stories to my ezine. Zinester is under attack.
I think they are being used by spammers, who use the service to get
their crap out to the world.

It's caused me a world of grief. Half of my 1000 subscribers are no longer receiving
my stories.

AOL blocked Zinester. My email address seems to be blocked as
well. I can't even mail my wife.

Spam makes us delete a lot of email. It also creates other problems. Spam
tools block large chunks of IP addresses. We all become victims.

I'm frustrated. I had a blog on my website. The spammers posted hundreds of
commments daily. Even though I had the settings to "No Comments Alowed" they
found a hole to stuff.

Mike

I use Zinester too - that's annoying to hear there's a spamming problem now. Sigh.

I feel your frustration Mike. Spammers have spoofed my domain name to send spam out using random letters @ my domain name as the return address. My inbox is flooded with undelivered mail and I'm nervous my domain will soon be blacklisted. Part of my day involves trawling through these for the original IP address and reporting it to the ISP. It's not a worthwhile use of my time and I'm angry.

I also had a problem with hundreds and hundreds of spam blog comments hitting my inbox as well, but I sorted that out by including a security word in pictorial format. Then I just set up filters so that only comments with the security word are allowed through, the rest go straight to Trash.
