Hi Beth! I'm Groovy. (No, really. I am!)

I write any insane random thought that comes to mind and now I actually have people begging me to write for them and throwing money at me...well, almost!

OK, 'bout time I put something up here. Dan Heim is the name, and poetry is my nemesis.

<grin>

I live in the desert north of Phoenix with my wife Sandi and two 80-pound German Sheps (Astro and Beta). After a prolonged power outage during the sweltering heat of August, back in the 90s, I vowed to never again be without electricity. Later that year we installed enough solar panels, with a battery backup, to keep all critical systems going for at least 3 days. That includes my home office. I often tell my clients how their work is produced using free solar electricity. Most are impressed. Some couldn't care less. If you are of the former group, you can read more on my website at: www.heimhenge.com/heimhenge.html

I've been doing technical writing for 25 years, formerly in conjunction with my career as a physics teacher, freelance since 1999. I do mostly educational stuff, including science animations for teachers. Still waiting to publish my CD/DVD of animations, which is a work in progress. Got a few books out there, mainly science and astronomy related, no huge sellers. Also been writing for Cole Publishing the last two years, doing articles on stormwater management for a municipal trade journal ... not the most exciting stuff, but it pays well. At the moment I'm most involved with self-syndicating a weekly astronomy column called Sky Lights. I've been doing the column for a local paper for 5 years now, and want to see if I can expand my circulation. The current paper prints 45,000, which ain't bad, but I barely break even for the time spent on the work. The publisher's been promising syndication for all her columnists for almost two years now, and I just got tired of waiting.

I did a lot of internet searching for "self-syndication" the last few weeks, and one of those searches brought me to this forum. After reading some of the threads, I decided I could contribute to, and learn from, others who were here.

Looking forward to seeing all of you around the forum.

Dan

PS: Penguin? What penguin?

G.O.L. You seem to be the translator here, so let me try another one on you. I've seen WAHM used in many of these bios. I suppose I could get it from context if I read enough posts. Right now, my best guess is "Writer And Home Maker," but it could also be "Working At Home Mom." Guess I was outa the loop when they created this acronym.

Hey, come to think of it ... I'm a writer and home maker (of sorts). When I "officially" retired from teaching, and started writing from my home office, I took over a lot of the day-to-day routines to equalize the load with Sandi.

So did I guess right? If I did, do I win anything? :)

Sounds exciting to me - I love physics! What little I understand, that is, LOL!

Can you post a link to your column if it's available?

Oh! Image *laughs sheepishly - then tries to think of another way of saying that, now that she's at college and has been told to avoid all adverbs* I've been reading that as WHAM.

Welcome to the dyslexic nuthouse Dan!

The penguin is a loooong story. But here's the important part: It's a virtual beastie that hangs around the virtual bar at Willow's place. For a long time I thought it was a short amorous gentleman in a tuxedo with particularly bad breath. [I'm short-sighted.] All I can say is I'm greatly relieved I never succumbed to its advances. How embarrassing would that be?

Let's not forget the tassle-wearing goats... Um, that reminds me... where ARE those goats?

Sounds like I need to get over to Willow's Bar. I have a feeling that alot of my metaphysical questions will be answered there. Between the penguin and goat, I should have it all covered.

Adele, my sample Sky Lights columns are at: www.heimhenge.com/skylights.html

Bear in mind that what you see there is still "under construction." After some more re-writing and formatting, I hope to "go public" soon. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. As I said earlier, I'm just now learning this self-syndication gig.

Dan

Dan, I know I come across as too goofy to be a science geek. but I AM a science geek. I've taught highschool biology and chemistry and I love growing "experiments" and blowing things up in my kitchen. I've never delved into the depths of physics, but I hope to soon. I've bookmarked your astrnomy site!

Don't we already have a thread for that? "Hide the evidence," or something?

I grow things in MY kitchen... I blow things up in MY kitchen... but NOBODY calls it science. They usually just call the HazMat team or the fire department.

Creative labeling wins again. If you you observe it and write down the results and your conclusions, its a science experiment!

Dan,

Welcome to the forum! There are some good folks on here. I'm your neighbor, btw. I live just south of you, down in Peoria. So, howdy from another "Zonie." :) (She says, waving frantically at the speeding cars on I-17!)
