For several months now, I've been struggling with the Scottsdale, AZ-based publishers of Loving Pets Magazine http://www.lovingpetsmagazine.com to receive full payment for a contracted article I turned in on October 27th, 2003 together with a bill.

I received their "call for submissions" from the National Writers Union hotline, with a guaranteed pay rate, etc.

Co-publisher Debbie Norwitz sent me a copy of the magazine in which my article appeared -- surrounded by many advertisers -- in December 2003, together with a handwritten note that read:

"People love your article! The magazine ran us a bit financially into the ground, but I know I owe you your fee -- we'll send it after the New Year. Thank you for your patience."

At this point I'm thinking, uh oh.

Several calls, statements, promises, and emails later -- but still no payment -- I agree to let them pay me in 3 equal installments (this is a small bill, by the way). I've received one of those payments back in early March; nothing since. I did write them a letter warning them that if they failed to send any of the payments as agreed, I'd be posting a warning here, and so I am doing that now -- on April 15th, 2004 -- over five months after the article was completed and turned in.

8 days after the post here, I received payment in full from this magazine, on April 23, 2004.

Curious -- do you think posting here had anything to do with getting payment?

It's very possible that posting here encouraged payment. It's very coincidental that I received payment after the post, and this magazine is actively soliciting freelancers from the National Writers Union and other places. They may simply have not wanted to turn off potential future writers.
