A friend of mine is splitting up with her partner, and is interested in the "bird's nest" form of custody for their adopted daughter. This is an arrangement in which the child stays in the family home, and the parents switch off between the old home and a new apartment. This seems like a good option in NYC, where they live, because rents are so high that to get a second apartment with a room for the child in a neighborhood close to the child's school and the other parent is way too expensive for them.

Have any of you tried the bird's nest thing? Or do you know anyone who has?

My friend would love to talk to someone doing this.

I have worked with couples as a marriage and family therapist who have found this to be very satisfactory. The nanny stays with the child in some cases as the parents move. In other cases other family members help out too.
